What I Learned This Weekend: Part One

Filed under: originals, movies, hoops, random, rock — Scott at 7:43 pm on Saturday, May 20, 2006

1. I learned, because Vh1 was showing “Back to the Future,” possibly to celebrate American/Libyan relations being normalized this week, that at the age of five I was a fucking moron. I thought cocaine-powered time machines, VW-driving terrorists and Marty inventing rock ‘n’ roll with lip-syncing & finger-tap guitar solos were all so awesome. I stand corrected.
2. I learned hipster craft shows are only slighty less sad that their red state counterparts.
3. I learned the Pistons are trying to give me a mutherfucking heart attack.
4. I learned where to get an Avocado Milkshake when in Chinatown.
5. I learned to always double-check to see if the jeans are on sale, cause sometimes they are trying to trick you.
6. I learned that if you claim you won a blog feud and then stop posting for two weeks, you in fact lost said blog feud.

‘Back to the Future’ is totally awesome. It’s such an amazing study of American culture. On one side it seems to be progressive by suggesting the notion of a black mayor (Goldie Wilson) in the 1950s, but on the other, it shows that the White Man can’t stand the fact that the Black Man invented rock-n-roll and they feel the need to travel through time to change that fact. It was no accident that Marty went back in time. Plus it shows that making out with your mom is never cool.

I’m actually kind of sad that we got into the blog feud now. I’m glad we won, but I didn’t think Stephanie would take it so hard. We broke her spirit, which we never intended.

Word. The racial dualism is striking, but the plot holes are numerous and after 20 years, I can no longer suspend my disbelieve. I would also like to restate that I loved this movie so, so much when I was younger and my defination of cool was so wrapped up in both Marty McFly and Alex Keaton that I am now trying to distance myself from his Reaganite lameness.
In regards to Ms. Happenstance, I’m sure she’ll land on her feet, but I do worry about her hippie-nerd fans? Where will they go? What will they masterbate to now? Her Grambo-like abscence must be even harder for them.
